    Course 1: Provide care to a frail person (US117029)

    This learning course is for care practitioners who are required to provide fundamental nursing care for a frail person on a continuous basis and under the direct or indirect supervision of a qualified health worker.

    The course includes the following :

    1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the human rights of the frail person.
    2. Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the normal function of the body systems.
    3. Identifying the common degenerative, disease and trauma processes and their effect on the body systems of the frail person.
    4. Assessing the condition and environment with reference to the specific needs of the frail person.
    5. Provide for the needs of the frail person under the supervision of a qualified health worker.
    6. Use of a variety of basic frail care equipment.

     The learner will be able to :

    1. Describe the common degenerative, disease and trauma process that may affect a frail person in terms of the effect on the body.
    2. Assess the client’s condition in terms of current health status and specific care needs.
    3. Draw up and maintain a care plan is drawn up in terms of the identified needs.
    4. Assess the environment in terms of factors that may contribute to risk of the frail person. Any changes required are identified and communicated to the family in a clear and concise manner.
    5. Maintaining the activities of daily living routine are demonstrated to the client in accordance with his/her specific needs.
    6. Identify and deal with negatives changes in condition are identified and referred to relevant people in accordance with codes of conduct.
    7. Identify and use alternatives in terms of functions performed and equipment used.

    Important : Practical Modules :

    There are significant portions of this course that require practical training and demonstrative assessments. In some instances experiential work at an appropriate facility is required and the learner may have to source these him/herself.

    Learners will have to attend all of these practical modules. Workplace experiential training may also be required as stated above and the training provider may not be in a position to secure such experiential work opportunities..

    Course 2: Administer Medication in a Home Environment (US114419)

    Course 3: Provide support relating to home based care (US260698)

    This unit course is for persons required to render care and manage clients and significant others at home and to provide relevant information to clients and significant others. The learner will gain fundamental knowledge of the diseases common to the learners’ working environment.

    Important Practical Modules :

    There are significant portions of this course that require practical training and demonstrative assessments. In some instances, experiential work at an appropriate facility is required and the learner may have to source these him/herself.

    Learners will have to attend all of these practical modules. Workplace experiential training may also be required as stated above and the training provider may not be in a position to secure such experiential work opportunities..

    The qualifying learner will be capable of :

    1. Providing information relating to disease and disability to individuals and groups.
    2. Assessing the health status of the client/patient .
    3. Assisting in the management of the client’s /patient daily living activities.
    4. Assisting in the maintenance of the client’s /patient health status.
    5. Providing psycho-social support to the client /patient and significant others.
    6. Assessing and taking responsibility for their own personal well-being.

    The care which this learning supports   takes place under the direct and indirect mentorship and supervision of a professional with relevant health care knowledge and experience.

    It applies  to persons rendering care and assistance within the home environment. Home may be defined in a variety of ways, e.g. all types of care including community care institutions and private nursing facilities.

    Course 4: Perform basic life support and first aid procedures (US119567)

    This course is  for persons required to assess an emergency situation and providing basic Life Support and basic First Aid in order to stabilise patients prior to transfer to the emergency services.

    People credited with this unit standard are able to :

    1. Demonstrate an understanding of emergency scene management.
    2. Demonstrate an understanding of elementary anatomy and physiology.
    3. Assess an emergency situation.
    4. Apply First Aid procedures to the life-threatening situation.
    5. Treat common injuries Learners credited with this course will be able to better practice good health and grooming habits.

    This will include the ability to Understand the Names & functions of :

    1. Anatomy and physiology of the human body.
    2. Primary and secondary examinations.
    3. Scope of practice, consent, recording.

    Important Practical Modules :

    This entire course  requires 2 full days practical training and demonstrative assessments. Some portion can be delivered on-line but this will have to be supported to be the required practical and observed training . In some instances, experiential work at an appropriate facility is required and the learner may have to source these him/herself. Please make sure you familiarize yourself with the arrangements for the practical training.

    Learners will have to attend all of these practical modules.
