Why should I do this course? 

Upon completion of the qualification students will be expected to provides technical assistance to users, including diagnosing and resolving issues and problems with software, hardware, computer peripheral equipment, networks, databases, systems and the internet.

The qualification outcomes cover types of software, hardware, components, upgrading and troubleshooting a computer, formatting and partitioning hard drives, and network topologies. Green technology, maintaining records of daily problems and remedial actions, and prepare evaluations for systems performance.

A qualified learner will be able to:
  1. Identify the potential green technologies, processes and procedures to create a sustainable computer environment to reduce e-waste in an organisation.
  2. Set up desktop/laptop for a new user according to software compatibility by installing operating systems and peripheral equipment according to given specifications.
  3. Communicate effectively using appropriate methods to maintain effective customer relationships according to organisational standards.
  4. Analyse and resolve hardware/software problems such as operational discrepancies to optimise performance of the desktop/laptop systems.
  5. Apply knowledge of principles and practices in order to identify and solve problems arising in the course of their work.
Workplace Experience

The student will have to be placed at a relevant worksite for the period of time indicated below in order to fulfil the requirements. Workplace experience will allow the learner or individual to practise and gain important experience and empower them to be ‘work ready’. Students should be aware that they are themselves responsible for these workplace placement arrangements.

  • PM-01, Troubleshoot computer and network faults

Workplace experience modules (100 Credits)

  • WM-01, Respond to user inquiries regarding fault request
  • WM-02, Set up equipment for users, check operating system performance and ensure proper installation of cables and software

  • WM-04, Identify the potential green technologies, processes and procedures for cost effective application and create a sustainable computer environment to reduce e-waste

COURSE OUTLINE:

Once registered, you will be uploaded to our online learning programme so that all your learning guides and aids can be accessed remotely.

Learning will be supported by online and class-based workshops as well as podcasts on the critical elements in the course.

ASSESSMENTS:

Vital College will conduct internal assessments by means of formative assessments, summative assessments and signed-off work experience log sheets. 

For this qualification the following assessments will be required over the period of the course:

  1. Knowledge modules: Online open book assessments 
  2. Knowledge modules: Class-based closed book final (summative) assessments
  3. Practical modules: Class-based learning
  4. Practical modules: Submission of tasks to a portfolio of evidence.
  5. Work Experience modules: Exposure to a relevant workplace and completion of a logbook

 

Upon successful completion of all knowledge, practical and workplace modules, Vital College will provide a Statement of Result (SOR) to the learner and QCTO, as part of the learner’s application to complete the External Summative Assessment (EISA) conducted by the QCTO. The exam is set in such a way that learners are required to integrate knowledge, practical skills and work experience with emphasis is on the application of what they have learned. The final exam, which is based on the exit level outcomes (ELO) is presented by the QCTO and not by us your training provider.

The learner will receive an Occupational Certificate: Computer Technician from the QCTO upon completion of the EISA.

Requirements: Grade 12 (Competency in the English language & Mathematical Literacy) or NQF Level 4 qualification

This qualification has both horizontal and vertical systemic articulation possibilities.

  • Higher Certificate in Computer Technical Support, Level 05 (SAQA ID: 96732).
  • Higher Certificate in Information and Communication Technology, Level 05 (SAQA ID: 96440).
  • Higher Certificate in Information Technology, Level 05 (SAQA ID: 98911)
  • Higher Certificate in Information Technology in User Support Services, Level 05 (SAQA ID: 81866).

Vertically:
