THIS BURSARY

Excellerate Property Services (EPS) is currently providing partial funding for the Care Practitioner course at the Durban campus. Eligible applicants are encouraged to apply online to be considered for this opportunity.

What is a Care Practitioner?

A Care Practitioner provides supervised and unsupervised care and support to patients and their immediate families or household members within the home and appropriate community-based settings.

The role focuses on promoting, restoring, and maintaining an individual’s maximum level of comfort, functionality, and overall health, including providing compassionate care that supports dignity at the end of life.

Home-care services are increasingly required by institutions, private households, and community-based care environments. There is therefore a growing need for qualified practitioners who can deliver comprehensive and professional home-care services tailored to both general and specialised care requirements.

A Care Practitioner delivers services beyond the scope of a domestic worker or general cleaner. The role requires awareness of health and safety risk factors, hygiene and infection control, ethical conduct, and professional standards of care. This qualification develops the core competencies required of all home-care practitioners, while also offering specialised skills for specific areas of care, such as elderly care, frail care, dementia care, and child care.

This qualification is ideal for:

  • Individuals providing home-care services within institutions or private households where specialised care is required
  • Persons currently working in a home-care environment who wish to enhance and formalise their skills
  • New entrants seeking a recognised qualification to gain employment in the home-care sector
  • Individuals aiming to develop the competencies required to deliver comprehensive home-care services with due regard for life, health, and property.

On completion of this part-qualification, learners will be able to:

  • Provide care to the elderly, frail individuals, persons with disabilities, and those living with chronic illnesses
  • Apply knowledge and practical approaches when working with individuals living with dementia
  • Implement palliative care principles with compassion and professionalism
  • Promote health, hygiene, and wellness practices within the home-care setting
  • Demonstrate essential life skills required for effective home-care practice
  • Perform home-care activities competently within a chosen area of specialisation.
