Why should I do this course?

Make a Difference in Your Community!

Imagine being equipped with the skills to carry out essential assessments of communities, households, and individuals. You’ll learn how to identify needs and provide targeted health education that empowers people to make informed decisions. But that’s not all!

You’ll also master the art of navigating the complex health and social services system, becoming a vital resource for those who need assistance. Whether it’s making referrals or guiding individuals to the right services, your support will make a tangible impact on lives.

Health Promotion Officer is a Community Health Worker whose main focus is on primary healthcare, with health promotion as a vital aspect. The HPO plays a pre-emptive role in the assessment and identification of health needs as well as to intervene in primary healthcare activities.

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to:

  • Conduct community, household and individual health assessments and identify health needs and risks (actual and potential) and facilitate the family or an individual to seek the appropriate health services.
  • Promote the health of the households and the individuals within these households.
  • Refer persons for further assessment and testing after performing simple basic screening.
  • Provide limited, simple health interventions in a household (e.g., basic first aid, oral rehydration, and any other basic intervention that she or he is trained to provide).Provide psychosocial support and managing interventions such as treatment defaulter tracing and adherence support.

Where can a Health Promotion Officer work?

  • Community Health Centres: Providing direct health services to individuals and families.
  • Government Health Departments: Supporting public health initiatives.

Students should be aware that they are themselves responsible for these workplace placement arrangements.
